Chris Cole and DC Shoes are sending 30 kids from the Philadelphia area to Woodward Action Sports Camp in Western Pennsylvania for a week beginning Sunday. As a kid, Cole, the two-time Thrasher magazine Skater of the Year and two-time X Games gold medalist, couldn't afford to go to Woodward. As an adult and elite pro, it's one of his favorite places.

"I was thinking of what we could do to give back to skaters in the Philadelphia area and the idea came through that because of how much I love Woodward, how accommodating Woodward has been for us and how willing they are as a camp to help out kids in the area," Cole told ESPN. "I approached Woodward about it; they were completely backing it. Then we were trying to figure out a way to get the right kids involved.

Teaming up with the Police Athletic League of Philadelphia, 30 kids were chosen to participate. All the kids involved skateboard and come from backgrounds where the camp opportunity would not be possible without the generosity of Cole, Woodward and DC shoes. Cole and Woodward are splitting the coast of sending the children to camp (tuition rate is more than $1,000 per camper) while DC is providing each kid with a brand new pair of Cole's signature Chris Cole S skate shoes.

As an added treat for the kids, Cole will be joining them during their skateboard camp experience. "I'm going to be up at Woodward for the majority of their week," he said.
Xtreme Sports Showhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13108911309437958343noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2751249370074598494.post-82787979986531836142011-08-17T23:25:00.000-07:002011-08-20T23:25:19.350-07:00Shaun White and Vail Resorts Announce Partnership

Vail Resorts announced that Shaun White will now be representing all six of Vail's world-class resorts. For years, Park City has dished out the dough to be named Shaun White's "home mountain" but now a new enterprise has swopped in and is footing the bill to retain the star.

Vail Resorts sent out an eager press release stating White will now call Northstar at Tahoe his "primary training resort" and he will also represent Vail's five other mountains. The ink on the new deal affirms White will design his own 22-foot superpipe at Northstar and every Epic Pass sale requires Vail Resorts to donate $5 to Shaun's charity of choice, St. Jude Children's Research Hospital.

We're all for the donation aspect of the deal- that's really cool... Just wondering how many of you will shred Northstar just because it's Shaun White's "home" turf?

As part of the launch of the new relationship, Vail Resorts will donate $5 for each Epic Season Pass sold to White's chosen charity, St. Jude Children's Research Hospital. In addition, White will be designing a limited edition Epic Season Pass, which will be available to Epic Season Pass holders this fall through a Facebook promotion.

"Shaun White is the ultimate personification of the new energy and vibrancy we see across the mountain resort industry. Shaun's creativity and innovation has led the way for the self-expression we see in the halfpipes and terrain parks at all six of our resorts.

Shaun embodies the same leadership we aspire to at Vail Resorts, as we constantly look for ways to improve and re-invent the guest experience," said Rob Katz, chairman and chief executive officer of Vail Resorts.

"We are excited to partner with Shaun and are thrilled to start our collaboration with a promotion that allows us to celebrate his creativity and commitment to give back to those in need."

"This feels like a homecoming because I have spent so much time riding at most of Vail Resorts' mountains," said White. "With Northstar as my home mountain, I now have the ideal place to train and continue to grow as an athlete and I am looking forward to all the possibilities this partnership brings."

VAIL RESORTS & SHAUN WHITE

White has dominated the sport of snowboarding for the past decade. He won his first Olympic gold medal in the Halfpipe event at the 2006 Winter Games in Torino, Italy, with a record 46.8 points and then went on to win it again in the 2010 Winter Games in Vancouver, improving his own record with 48.4 points in his final run. White is the first and only snowboarder to win four consecutive gold medals in the Winter X Games Halfpipe competition. Combining his success in skateboarding, White is the first athlete to compete and medal in two different sports in both the Summer and Winter X Games in 2003 and again in 2011. He also is the first and only athlete to win gold medals in both the Summer (2006 and 2008) and Winter Dew Cup events (2009). White was recently honored with the 2011 ESPY for "Male Action Sports Athlete" for the fourth consecutive year.
"It feels awesome to win in Portland because this is the home of concrete parks and what better place to win on the portable bowl at Dew Tour," Lasek said. "It's pretty exciting making the run that I made and making it three times is a great accomplishment for me. I think lately I've had the heart of a tiger, just attacking it, going for it, living life and skateboarding. That's what it's all about."

Andy Macdonald pulled it all together in his final run of the superjam to take third and bump Ben Hatchell into fourth after they were having their own battle for placement throughout the event.

"Everyone was landing so many things, so I had no clue who was going to win. I'm just grateful that it was me," said Rodriguez after the super final results were announced.

P-Rod threw down runs that included effortless switch back lips down the rail, switch kickflip backside 50-50s on the hubba, and kept it more consistent than any other competitor in the super finals.

Rounding out the Skate Street super finals in Portland was Kelvin Hoefler in fourth, Danilo Do Rosario in fifth and Adam Dyet in sixth.

Dew Tour favorite Greg Lutzka broke his board in the first round of finals and was forced to ride a borrowed board. As a result, Lutzka did not advance to the super finals.

"I could've done better if I hadn't broken my board, but we're out here, having fun and Portland is amazing. I had to go through four boards to get comfortable, and I still wasn't comfortable, but that's just the way it is," said Lutzka during the super finals.
Paul, Theotis, and Keelan are to be featured in a new web short from Mountain Dew entitled Streets of Fury. Judging by the quality of coverage Paul and Theotis have always put out, in addition to Keelan being handpicked for the team by the likes of Paul, though short, the video will probably bring some NBDs and probably some WTFs, so be sure to RSVP to the online premiere or I’m sure you’ll still be able to check it out tomorrow one way or another.

Xtreme Sports Showhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13108911309437958343noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2751249370074598494.post-30473194884721487722011-08-08T01:26:00.000-07:002011-08-21T01:27:47.562-07:00Etnies Releases Mike Manzoori’s Panoramic Film ‘Aimless’

Today Etnies put up Mike Manzoori’s panoramic film Etnies up on their site. If you can recall, Kyle Leeper’s rain skating video, you’ll know that Etnies has been putting together some quality skate clips lately and this one is no different. Aimless delves a bit into the “artsy” side of skate film, but it’s not without some good skating that will make you want to get out there and get some for yourself. Click above to check it out.

From Etnies:
Until today, when etnies launched AIMLESS on etnies.com, the only place to see Mike Manzoori’s panoramic film was at La Gaîté Lyrique in Paris, France. Manzoori created AIMLESS as part of etnies 25 year anniversary celebration, and you can watch it here:

As skateboarding continues to evolve and progress, it draws from the many influences that define and redefine its character; no one can predict what it will be like in the NEXT 25 years. With this momentum, the movement will not stagnate, the destination is uncertain so it’s irrelevant. The magic is in the journey and experience. Mike Manzoori’s AIMLESS film celebrates this visually by capturing the feeling of pure exploration from a skateboarder’s perspective.
Xtreme Sports Showhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13108911309437958343noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2751249370074598494.post-80938048923109468212011-08-03T01:51:00.000-07:002011-08-03T01:52:15.624-07:00Shaun White, Red Bull Part Ways

X Games 17's Skateboard Vert gold medalist Shaun White has parted ways with Red Bull, ending his sponsorship with the energy drink giant that helped propel the skate and snowboard prodigy into the highest ranks of competitive sport worldwide.

"After four exceptional years as a Red Bull athlete, Shaun White has decided to pursue other business ventures," said Patrice Radden of the Red Bull Media House. "The end of this partnership has been on amicable terms."

Reached via email by ESPN.com, Radden said: "We are extremely proud of our time spent with Shaun, including the Red Bull 'Big in Japan' filming trip, his participation in Red Bull Snowscrapers in downtown New York City, and most notably the Red Bull Project X athlete performance project, featuring a private half-pipe training facility, which helped contribute to Shaun's gold medal performance in the [2010 Olympic Winter Games]."

Last month, the Sports Business Journal reported that White and Red Bull had not come to an agreement to renew his contract, which expired shortly after White's historic Winter X Games SuperPipe three-peat in January. That contract was valued at more than $1 million annually, and White's team of agents at Creative Artists Agency have reportedly been seeking a beverage deal worth at least three times that.
"I don't see any brand paying that type of money for him during these economic times, Connexions Sports & Entertainment President Bob Walker told the Sports Business Journal. "But if anyone can get it, Shaun can because of the Olympic program."

In addition to back-to-back Olympic gold medals, the 24-year-old holds the most medals in Winter X Games history at 15, 10 of them gold. In X Games Skate Vert competition, White holds five medals, including gold from Saturday night.
Xtreme Sports Showhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13108911309437958343noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2751249370074598494.post-26734182875597610642011-08-01T14:11:00.000-07:002011-08-03T02:15:23.828-07:00NYC Skateboarding Marathon?

Adrenalina Skateboard Marathon competitors ride their longboards in front of the Manhattan skyline.
NEW YORK -- A man known as "The Wiggler" stepped on his skateboard in pursuit of a world record and a $15,000 payday on Saturday. All that stood between him and glory were 26.2 miles and approximately 150 competitors.

Such were the stakes on Governor's Island, site of the first leg of the four-city Adrenalina Skateboard Marathon longboard tour, which also includes stops in San Juan, Puerto Rico; Plano, Texas; and Hallandale Beach, Fla. The Governor's Island course featured a 12-lap circuit around the waterfront promenade.

The green flag dropped shortly after 7 a.m., but the unofficial start might have come 20 minutes earlier when Solomon Lang, making his way to the island on the ferry with other sleepy skateboarders, broke the serenity of the cruise by unleashing a primal howl, a metaphorical foghorn of zest and vigor.
"It was a surreal moment," said Lang, a Brooklyn resident who finished in 10th place. "If I see a person on a longboard, we're automatically brothers. These are the people we chill with, play with, party with. It was a beautiful moment."

Indeed, it was a beautiful morning. Temperatures in New York City would reach the mid-90s later in the day, but it was breezy and 74 degrees at the start of the race on Governor's Island.

After the first lap, it was Paul Kent, 29, from Alberta, Canada, in the lead. Hot on his tail was Jeff Vyain, the 27-year-old long-haired hot shot from Indianapolis, who now lives in Brooklyn. The two set an unforgiving pace that none could match, and in the end, it was Vyain, the one they call "The Wiggler," who finished first in 1:31:40. Kent followed 29 seconds later, winning $5,000.

"There's a feeling on the board, it's such an intimate experience with the surface I'm riding on," Kent said.

Five years ago, Kent couldn't afford a bus ticket from Calgary to Vancouver to attend a race. He said he skated the 600-plus miles, arriving the day before the race and finishing third.

"I do this because it challenges me," Kent said. "I like to make myself suffer and sort of relish in it."

Jeff Vyain crosses the finish line with a world record.

Vyain, who ran cross country at Belmont University in Nashville, Tenn., shattered the previous marathon world record of 1:40:58 that he set at the inaugural Adrenalina Skateboard Marathon in Hallandale Beach last November. In fact, eight of the first 10 finishers on Saturday broke that mark.

"I got two and a half hours of sleep last night," Vyain said. "I was fired up, yeah, but my roommate was moving out. It was horrible."

With his prize money, Vyain said he intends to shop around for sensory deprivation chambers.

"I know it sounds kind of wacky," he said. "But it's really good for healing and meditation."
Camille "The Beast" Best, 22, from Brooklyn, took home $3,000 for being the first woman to finish. She set the women's world record at 1:59:15. The previous mark was 2:12:24, and the first five women to finish on Saturday beat it.

"I'm going to try to beat that record in Puerto Rico," Best said of her next race in the Adrenalina series.
Perhaps no one was more aware of the stakes than Jason Yerke, 29, of Lansing, Mich. He was in third place after the third lap, but heading into the first turn of lap four, he lost his balance and crashed.
A chain-link fence abuts the road next to the water in that spot, but it hangs like a skirt about eight inches from the ground. So when Yerke fell, his board -- along with his hopes of finishing in the money -- jettisoned from under him, and slid under the fence and into New York Harbor.

Yerke stood, took a deep breath, unclipped the chin strap of his helmet and flung it to the curb next to his family and friends, who had the misfortune of witnessing the crash from only a few feet away.
Yerke sat on the curb with them and was greeted by spectator Shawn Burns, 31, of Barnegat, N.J.

"Here, use mine," Burns said, offering his longboard.

Yerke politely declined, and the two shook hands.
"I wanted to compete against the best in the world," Yerke said. "I'm really bummed out. We were here to win, to make a name for ourselves.
White landed an incredible string of tricks to finish his run and was rewarded with 93 points by the judges, just enough to beat Gagnon's 91.66. An elated White seemingly hugged half the massive crowd at L.A. Live when Gagnon fell on his ultimate attempt, sealing White's first Vert gold since 2007 and just his second Summer X Games gold medal in eight appearances.
"I went with win it. You really want to know what goes on up there? Everything crosses our minds. I'm glad I shook it out of there and started landing, trick after trick. I was gaining confidence and came through, man."

His final three tricks in the winning run, which he'd spent weeks perfecting on Tony Hawk's private ramp, went like this: 720, body varial frontside 540, heelflip body varial frontside 540 (with a fully extended grab behind his back).

"I was trying a different run and I thought it was better but it wasn't," said White, who scored an 89.33 on a flawless first run in the finals. "I made the good call of switching it out and doing that last one."

Last year, White finished second to Gagnon, a five-time Vert gold medalist. White's gold was his 21st career X Games medal (summer and winter combined) and 13th gold.

Bucky Lasek, a four-time gold medalist in Vert, took bronze.

Xtreme Sports Showhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13108911309437958343noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2751249370074598494.post-57210064016366212932011-07-31T20:25:00.000-07:002011-08-21T20:26:46.989-07:00The X Games' Newest Sport Is a Great Success

The obscure motocross discipline of Enduro X got prime-time spotlight at the close of X Games 17 Sunday, and true to its billing, the new event proved a suitably bone-crunching affair entirely worthy of X involvement.

"It's pretty clear Enduro X is here to stay," said X Games host Sal Masekela.

The sport's biggest hero, Taddy Blazusiak of Poland, came-from-behind to win his first X Games gold medal after surviving an unplanned trip to the last chance qualifier in order to gain entrance to the main event. That was one more grueling race than he wanted.

More widely known as Enduro Cross, this very technical form of moto racing is much more crash-derby than Supercross, with riders battling for survival on what is essentially a brutal obstacle course. The track is filled with boulders, giant logs, ponds and of course a few jumps and tight turns that require exceptional strength, agility, and of course endurance.

Having said that, it's never going to be considered a pretty looking sport. Frankly, its ugliness is one of its most endearing characteristics, as the wipeouts are spectacular.

While speeds don't approach those found in the premier motocross racing series like Supercross (stadium) and outdoor, the hits are just as bad, and much more frequent.

While a fledgling American Enduro Cross series helped the sport gain the notoriety needed to earn X Games placement, it's much more popular in Europe, where riders like Taddy Blazusiak have been dominating it.

That said, the fledgling American tour is likely to attract more local talent now with Enduro X getting X Games attention. And for what it's worth, Americans Mike Brown and Justin Soule proved they can compete by taking the silver and bronze medals respectively.

Blazusiak's road to victory was hardly an easy one. In his first heat he failed to advance directly to the final after getting caught up in an early pile up, and later, thrown over the handlebars while trying to jump a log.

After winning the last chance qualifier he found himself in a tough final battle. Mike Brown jumped out to an early lead, but Blazusiak pounced on the outside of a critical turn when Brown got hung up trying to avoid another rider.

"It's been a great night--a long night," Blazusiak said afterward. "It took me a while to get to the main but we did it."

Blazusiak is just the third Polish athlete in X Games history to win a gold medal. The other two both came in the now extinct X Games discipline of speed climbing.
Ryan Sheckler came in a close second. "[Sheckler] definitely gave me some great competition," Huston said. "He's an awesome skater."

Chris Cole won the best trick of the contest -- a 360 flip to 50-50 on the hubba ledge -- and finished third.

In the tech section, skaters are given seven tries to perform their best trick. After flailing on a kickflip back Smith on the kinked rail, Huston regrouped and did a kickflip backside lipslide. Cole stomped a backside 360 lipslide on the same kinked rail, and Luan Oliveira, who ended up seventh, came through with a slew of technical tricks like a switch tailslide switch heelflip out on the ledge. Fourth place Paul Rodriguez squeaked his way into the line section with a switch backside tailslide switch heel to regular. Eric Koston and Chaz Ortiz were eliminated in the tech section.

Huston was ahead of the pack heading into the line section, but the battle between him and Sheckler was fierce until the end. Sheckler did a line that ended with long feeble to back Smith on the bump to bar. Huston answered back with a kickflip backside 50-50ing the square out rail and bigspin frontside boardsliding the round flat rail off the stairs.

Sheckler continued to stomp tricks like a massive 360 flip down the stairs and a fakie frontside flip. When Sheckler fell backside 360ing the stairs, Huston advanced his lead with a crooked grind down the hubba ledge. On Sheckler's last attempt, he spun his backside 360, landed, but at the last moment slipped out, securing Huston's third consecutive Street League win.

At this third stop of the 2011 Street League, the hubba ledge was bigger and the stairs were longer than at the two previous Street Leagues, held in Seattle and Kansas City, Mo., earlier this summer.

The Street League Championships take place in Newark, N.J., on Aug. 28. "I'll just keep trying to do what I'm doing," Huston said about the final stop. "That's the main one I'm trying to win."

Muska was first detained by security at the Roosevelt Hotel around 2AM. Law enforcement sources tell us Muska was seen spray painting his name on a nearby Coffee Bean.

While security guards waited for LAPD officers to arrive -- Muska demanded the guards let him go, and called them "ni**as" several times ... including one instance in which he said, "Fu** all these ni**as right here."

LAPD eventually showed up and arrested and booked Muska for felony vandalism -- and our sources say Muska had tagging materials on him when he was arrested.

We got shots of Muska's alleged handiwork at the coffee shop -- "Muska"' -- and also at Hollywood's El Capitan Theater ... "Muska kills.
Medina was left comboed for most of the heat. His 19.37 heat total in the final would be the highest of the entire event. Mr/ Wilson chose a great time to peak today.

The waves were lumpy but reforming into fun walls on certain sets. Julian was able to nab two big rights that walled all the way through to the sand. Gabriel Medina of Brazil never found a good rhythm in the final, despite landing a ridiculous frontside rotator (check the vid) on a funky left. Medina came pretty close to claiming his second Prime event in two months coming off his victory in Brazil. The kid's having quite a year.
Marcus Grönholm of Finland won friday's Super Rally event at The Revolution, the first round of the 2011 Global RallyCross Championship, held at Toyota Speedway in Irwindale, Calif. Super Rally features two rally cars on the same course, battling wheel to wheel in a best-two-of-three showdown.

"Today had a difficult start because I haven't driven the car in a while. The start is very important, and I did not have good starts today." said Grönholm, a two time World Rally Champion, after the podium. "You have to just stay on your line, and if you are bumped, you try to go where you want."

During the finals, Grönholm faced off against European rallycross veteran Michael Jernberg. The two were incredibly tight through both heats, bumping against each other in the final corner before the finish, jostling for the lead. Jernberg took second place, ahead of Tanner Foust in third.

"We had a few technical problems today, but we fixed the car," said Jernberg of his Czech-manufactured Skoda Fabia. "The car doesn't have much power in the slow, tight corners, so it is difficult to drive."

Marcus Grönholm had a strong showing on Friday.

Foust suffered car trouble during the semifinals, nearly failing to make the podium at all, but the team was able to fix the car. This allowed Foust to beat his Olsberg teammate Pontus Tidemand, who finished fourth.

"I'm excited. This is the first time two rally cars have been run on the same course at the same time, side by side," said Foust. "The two-lap format doesn't give a lot of time to build an advantage."

As the morning rain and clouds burned off, the track at Irwindale dried up, and drivers found the grip improving. That became vital for the gravel sections.

"There are three acceleration points on the course that happen at low speed on gravel, so you really need to set up for grip on gravel," said Rhys Millen, driver of the Red Bull Hyundai Veloster.

Both Hyundai cars ran well early in the day, but during quarterfinals, both drivers were eliminated.
In the 2WD action, Dillon Van Way took first place in his Ford Focus. Van Way campaigned the Focus to a 2WD Rally America title in 2009, and loved the format of Super Rally.

"I used to race supermoto, and this is basically the same sort of thing, but in a car," said Van Way. "I love it!"

Second place went to Matthew Johnson in a Mazda RX-8. The car is very new to Johnson, who had problems through the day, including a transmission that stuck in second gear.

"That car is like one big fight, you really have to work," said Johnson, who also had steering difficulty through the day.

Randy Zimmer finished in third, in his carbon fiber-bodied Mazda Miata. Zimmer has been building the car over the last 11 weeks.

"It was a long road to get here," said Zimmer. "You really need to be in this series from the start."
Super Rally sees the cars on the same course, but there are two different lines in the middle section: a main line and the "joker," a b-line each competitor must take on one lap of each race. Drivers complete two laps in each race, and the driver who finishes with the best two out of three advances to the next round.

For Colorado driver Jimmy Keeney, the event ended during elimination rounds, when he came up short on the jump, rolling end over end and spinning on the nose of the car. Keeney was examined by medical staff and is okay, but the car was heavily damaged, and can not be repaired before tomorrow's races.

The Revolution continues tomorrow morning, with the debut of rallycross, where fans can watch six cars compete head to head in each race. Drivers will have to fight for position, where even the slightest mistake could put teams out of contention.
According to his website -- Bubba tried stopping a vehicle using flashing red and blue lights while driving his 2008 Toyota Tundra in Orlando last Sunday night.
Unfortunately for Stewart, that car was full of off-duty troopers ... and he was arrested and charged with impersonating an officer.

In the 2010 season, Beijing Olympic bronze medalist Donny "dR" Robinson had more time off the track injured than ever before in his career. Robinson's injury streak began with a collapsed lung suffered at the Madrid stop of the UCI Supercross last March. Robinson then re-collapsed his lung while practicing at the Olympic Training Center in Chula Vista, Calif last spring.

The third and final collapse happened last July, just two weeks shy of the UCI Worlds event in South Africa. Following the re-injury, Robinson went in for surgery to fuse his lung to his ribcage, which would make his lung less vulnerable to injury. Unfortunately, the surgery would keep him off of his bike and out of training for the remainder of the 2010 season.

In October of 2010, Robinson started riding again. "It feels the same, but maybe I've just gotten used to not feeling the same," said Robinson regarding his health as he started to train for the 2011 season.

At his first race back in January (the Silver Dollar Nationals in Reno, Nevada) Robinson stood on a podium for the first time in ten months, receiving a solid third place finish. During the Silver Dollar weekend, Robinson even had what he would call a "baby fall," walking away unscathed and regaining confidence in his lung and accompanying surgery.

It seemed that Robinson was getting his career and goal of being on the 2012 Olympic Team back on track. With a few races under his belt, Robinson began training harder at the Olympic Training Center, returning to the Supercross track with fellow 2012 Olympic hopefuls. But on Thursday, March 3, Twitter posts from fellow riders at the center began filtering in. According to the information, Robinson has fallen on his head and "tacoed" his helmet.

Robinson spoke with ESPN on Friday: "At first I thought it was my lung, but after a second, it didn't strike me as the same injury. After sitting down, I got up and started to feel light headed, so the medical staff set me back down. Then I blacked out for a couple seconds, and once that happened, it was mandated that I was going to get checked out at the hospital."

The news was better than Robinson expected: "The concussion test results were better than my the last time i took them in January -- baseline results. That means I get smarter with each crash and concussion," said Robinson shortly after leaving his doctor's office on Friday.

As of now, Donny is laying low for a couple of days, and he has a few weeks time before he hits his next event in Surprise, Arizona at the ABA Speedworld Nationals. Regardless of what has happened, Robinson

remains determined to get back to the top at any cost.
Xtreme Sports Showhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13108911309437958343noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2751249370074598494.post-65980202830320580202011-03-06T11:24:00.000-08:002011-03-07T11:29:04.007-08:00Dean Wilson Wins Super Cross From 8th Spot

James Stewart might be the baddest dude around to come from the crash he had, within a few seconds of being a lap down, and then climb all the way up to ninth place, never going a lap down to Ryan Villopoto.

Andrew Short is riding that 350 like a 250, and it's working. Fourth? Nice. He has matched Mike Fisher's KTM finishes now...

The retro Fox gear was cool, but it did look a little out of place on Ken Roczen, considering he was riding a bright-orange KTM.

Chad Reed is scrappy, and he was gaining on Ryan Villopoto at the end of the main event.

The wrist injury that Justin Barcia has sure does take the spring out of his step after 5-8 laps of racing. Then again, wouldn't it do that to you, at minimum?
Justin Barcia talks to Fox's Chris "Beeker" Onstott about his write wrist after the main. (Photo: CoxMX.com)

Blake Baggett now not only has all the pieces to the puzzle, but he knows it. Uh oh...

Trey Canard sure is having some horrible luck lately. In Daytona, he crashed early on with Ivan Tedesco, then as he was coming back through the field, Brett Metcalfe crashed in front of him and took Canard down with him. The only guy with worse luck in that incident was Metcalfe, who got hit by Trey.

Malcolm Stewart is fast. He challenged for the lead in his heat race against Blake Baggett, who ended up winning the main. The problem isn't Malcolm's speed, it just seems like he gets too excited and crashes. More racing will be good for the younger Stewart.

Ryan Dungey sure is having some crap luck. He blew a motor while winning his heat race over Ryan Villopoto, who ended up winning the main. He had to go through the LCQ and came from way, way back for third. His time is coming. It has to be. Unless the bad luck this year is simply payback for the good luck from last year...

@SalMasekela: Kelly Clark did the most mental front 1080 about 15 feet out at Mammoth Grand Prix. #winning

@susiefloros: @kellyclarkfdn is the one with #tigerblood today. 1080s 15ft out = much higher than Charlie Sheen's toxic life.

Clark is no one-trick pony. She's got those 1080s in the bag. And after her win today, she's got her sights set on an even higher goal: total tour domination.

"This is definitely a big win for me," said Clark. "I came away with the Dew Tour title and the Grand Prix title now. I'm looking forward to next week and seeing if I can't step it up in the TTR and the Global Open series."

In a strange twist, instead of counting towards FIS points, as Grand Prix results usually do, today's USSA halfpipe contest was linked up with the TTR, and rated as a 5Star event. With this win Clark has moved into fourth place on the TTR World Tour ranking - a list that slopestyle dominator Jamie Anderson has been sitting on top of all season.

If Clark wins the US Open next weekend, decides to try her hand at slopestyle and places in the top 12 there, she will overtake Jamie Anderson and win not only the TTR Tour Title, but the Burton Global Open title -- effectively claiming every trophy there is to win in competitive snowboarding in a non-Olympic season that there is.

Clark was followed onto the podium by Gretchen Bleiler in second and Sarah Conrad, from Canada, in third.

On the men's side, the competition was anyone's game. Matt Ladley, the ultimate victor won with his first lap through the pipe finals.

"I feel great. It's hard to explain. It's surreal. I got a victory lap up there and I was thinking, 'I already won, this is crazy,'" Ladley said. "I knew I put down a solid first run but I saw a lot of those guys landing their doubles, but it turns out it held up pretty well."

Greg Bretz, who was riding for a hometown crowd was happy to come in second in front of friends and family, and while Louie Vito would have rather come in on top, he was happy to come away with the overall Grand Prix series title.
Nick CollinsIt would have been more shocking if these two hadn't won.

At the slopestyle portion of the USSA Grand Prix of Snowboarding in Mammoth, Chas Guldemond and Jamie Anderson did what they do best: win slopestyle contests. You could almost say it was a little unfair for them to even enter, as the two rode relatively uncontested.

There was a little confusion over the fact that, while the Grand Prix halfpipe event was TTR sanctioned, the slopestyle event only counted towards FIS rankings. Since there have been about seven million slopestyle and big air contests so far this season, give or take, when it was discovered that no TTR tour points on the line many high-level slope riders chose to take a much-deserved competition break before the U.S. Open, which starts in just a couple of days.

Despite Guldemond's apparent advantage over the competition field Spencer Shaw from Stratton, Vermont managed to hold the lead throughout the finals. It was only Guldemond's final run, which was also the last run of the contest, that bumped him into second place. Brett Esser rounded out the podium in third.
Holland Hospital spokeswoman Deb Patterson says 16-year-old Fennville High School basketball player Wes Leonard died Thursday night. A cause of death has not yet been determined.

Patterson says paramedics performed CPR on Leonard before he was pronounced dead at the hospital.
The Holland Sentinel reported that Leonard had scored the game-winning layup in a 57-55 win over Bridgman in overtime to cap Fennville's 20-0 season. Leonard fell to the ground after teammates and fans rushed the court.

By Megan Michelson
Freeskier Ryan Hawks died Tuesday morning from injuries sustained in a crash at the North American Freeskiing Championships at Kirkwood, Calif., which ended Monday. He was 25 years old.

Hawks, who is originally from Vermont but has been living in Utah, threw a backflip off a large cliff on Kirkwood's Cirque on Sunday at the Freeskiing World Tour and crashed upon landing. Ski patrol immediately tended to his injuries and he was taken by helicopter to Reno's Renown Health Center, where he was admitted to the Intensive Care Unit.

Dan Davis, spokesperson for Renown Health, confirmed Hawks' death Tuesday morning. According to Reno's Washoe County Medical Examiner, Hawks' cause of death is currently pending examination.

Hawks was part of a hard-charging group of Vermont-born skiers called Green Mountain Freeride. On their website, Hawks wrote, "My father always said, 'A skier carries his own skis,' so I learned how to carry my batman skis by the age of two and have been skiing ever since ... I grew up on the slopes and was instilled with a deep passion and respect for my surroundings by those very same mountains. Three years ago, I hitched a ride west and have been here every winter since."

"We'd all agree he was one of the happiest people we'd ever met," said Hawks' close friend Lars Chickering Ayers, also a member of Green Mountain Freeride and a competitor in the Freeskiing World Tour. "He brought that to the ski community. He was loved by everyone he met. He was always positive and that was his way of being."

Hawks' passing marks the third death to a competitor in a big-mountain freeskiing contest in the last few years. In 2008, 27-year-old Aspen local John Nicoletta died from injuries sustained while competing in the Freeskiing World Tour Championships at Alyeska, and in 2007, Swiss skier Neal Valiton passed away after a crash at an International Freeskiers Association competition in Tignes, France.

Bobby competing at his home mountain in Breck

For 19-year-old Bobby Brown, fame has become a prevalent factor in life; something he may not have anticipated when he first set his sights on becoming a pro skier. In the few years Brown has been skiing professionally, he’s quickly made a name for himself among the celebrated athletes of generations past who have pushed the progression of the sport over the years.

In 2010, Brown was the first skier to win two gold medals at the same Winter X Games. One of those was the result of throwing the first switch double misty 1440 in a competition, earning a perfect score. Because of accomplishments like these, among the many others we’ve seen including his recent win of the slopestyle Dew Cup, Brown has made a statement in the sport of skiing. He’s here to stay, and the show is only going to get better.

Brown’s reputation has not only been established in skiing, but it is quickly growing beyond the boundaries of the sport. Brown has jumped to a level of fame other skiers have only dreamed of. First there was his nomination for an ESPY. Then the MTV appearance. And then, oh yeah – a phone call from Olympic swimmer Michael Phelps. Just to say hi.

Waiting for his scores in Breck, and the result was a win

Maybe this acquisition of celebratory status is due to the recent popularity spike of freeskiing in mainstream media, a sport that just a few short years ago was obscure to the general public, and Brown happened to burst onto the scene at the right time. Or maybe it simply comes down to Bobby’s charmingly good looks and unassuming personality (cue “Teen Heartthrob” nickname).

This young, hardworking skier has only been on the pro scene since 2008 when he was first discovered by Salomon. What’s even more surprising is that he didn’t start skiing until the age of 11. A significant key to Brown’s success is that he has taken full advantage of every opportunity to come his way. Between the commute from Denver, Colorado to the mountains every weekend before moving to Breckenridge, to now taking time out of his busy training and competition schedule for media tours, Brown isn’t one to pass up opportunities.

Going for it on the massive jumps in Killington

This dedication has clearly paid off by looking at Brown’s results the last few years, both on hill and within the eyes of the general public. But like anyone else, Brown can waver under pressure. The hype at this winter’s X Games in remembrance of his double-gold performance from the year prior got to him. Brown admitted, “I couldn’t handle it and I blew it. That’s a great example of how I need to be mentally on point.”

To shake off his performance at X and move forward, Brown headed into the third and final stop of the Dew Tour with a fresh outlook. With a win and a second-place-finish under his belt from the first two stops of the Tour, he simply focused on the day. “I came into Snowbasin with a smile on my face and genuinely enjoyed myself,” said Brown. “It was the best I’ve skied in a while.”

Killington was another podium performance, and he finished here in second-place

This Dew Cup was a long time coming. The past two years, he’s placed 3rd and 2nd, respectively. This was his first year to walk away with the title, saying, “I’m stoked to finally put the consistency down in the Dew Tour and win the Cup. It’s something I’ve wanted for a few years.”

Consistency was key for Brown this year, focusing on each stop as if it were its own event. “I didn’t think about the Tour from an overall aspect. My individual effort at each contest led up to the ultimate result of the Dew Cup.” Another contributing factor to Bobby’s success was the presence of his supportive family at all three stops. His Dad even made the long haul out to Vermont.

Snowbasin, Bobby went big

The Dew Tour is an event Brown and the other skiers truly appreciate. The point system is a motivating factor that opens the doors for a big win at the end. In addition, it provides a lot of national exposure to the athletes and the sports they are trying to grow—a factor Brown is keen on. Salomon International Freeski Team Mananger Tyler Gigg said, “Bobby is an innovator and because of that the sport will grow around him and with him for many years to come.”

Looking forward, Bobby plans to keep skiing for as long as possible. By resisting the various pressures put on him and continually taking advantage of every opportunity, he plans to use his overwhelming rise to stardom for the greater good of the sport. “There are a lot of titles people put on me but I’m just going to keep doing what I normally do and try not to let it get to me. I’m ready to take this to the next level and use all the media outlets I’m getting to show skiing to a broader audience.”

A key member of this particular audience may include the talented Taylor Swift. As Brown so eloquently put it, “I like Taylor Swift a little bit. Ok maybe more than a little bit.” If this is a ploy into another opportunity to gain public exposure (for skiing, of course), Taylor’s your girl. Despite the rumors, the two are not actually dating…yet.
The first race of the series kicks off at Irwindale Speedway in Irwindale, Calif. March 25-26, with two additional races at Old Mill Rally Park in Snoqualmie, Wash. and Pikes Peak International Raceway in Fountain, Colo.

Following the success of rally events at X Games, including the first X Games RallyCross competition at last summer's X Games 16, the GRC series will be distributed on a tape-delayed basis domestically in the U.S. on ESPN and ESPN2 and to more than 100 countries through international network distribution. ESPN3.com will provide live coverage on the 24/7 live broadband sports network and on ESPN Mobile TV. Additionally, original web-exclusive content will be created for digital distribution across non-linear ESPN platforms throughout the social media landscape, including ESPN and X Games official Facebook pages.
"We look forward to working with RallyCross Management and bringing together world-class drivers and manufacturers to showcase this exciting form of motorsports racing to ESPN audiences around the world."

Three-time X Games rally gold medalist Tanner Foust, said, "RallyCross has huge potential in the U.S. and is almost the perfect spectator motorsport with the whole track visible from one seat, insane racecars that are pushing, shoving, sliding sideways and jumping. The added bonus of ESPN's involvement brings in a lot of the stars from the X Games, and anyone who's ever seen the X Games understands what ESPN is capable of doing for action sports."
