Dean Wilson Wins Super Cross From 8th Spot

 

Dean Wilson is a bad dude to come from as far back as he did to eighth.

James Stewart might be the baddest dude around to come from the crash he had, within a few seconds of being a lap down, and then climb all the way up to ninth place, never going a lap down to Ryan Villopoto.

Andrew Short is riding that 350 like a 250, and it's working. Fourth? Nice. He has matched Mike Fisher's KTM finishes now...

The retro Fox gear was cool, but it did look a little out of place on Ken Roczen, considering he was riding a bright-orange KTM.

The wrist injury that Justin Barcia has sure does take the spring out of his step after 5-8 laps of racing. Then again, wouldn't it do that to you, at minimum?

Blake Baggett now not only has all the pieces to the puzzle, but he knows it. Uh oh...

Trey Canard sure is having some horrible luck lately. In Daytona, he crashed early on with Ivan Tedesco, then as he was coming back through the field, Brett Metcalfe crashed in front of him and took Canard down with him. The only guy with worse luck in that incident was Metcalfe, who got hit by Trey.


Malcolm Stewart is fast. He challenged for the lead in his heat race against Blake Baggett, who ended up winning the main. The problem isn't Malcolm's speed, it just seems like he gets too excited and crashes. More racing will be good for the younger Stewart.

Ryan Dungey sure is having some crap luck. He blew a motor while winning his heat race over Ryan Villopoto, who ended up winning the main. He had to go through the LCQ and came from way, way back for third. His time is coming. It has to be. Unless the bad luck this year is simply payback for the good luck from last year...

Chad Reed, of Dade City, Fla., Captured His Sixth-Career Win in San Diego

A dedicated crowd of 53,342 fans withstood the rain inside Qualcomm Stadium on Saturday night as the 2011 Monster Energy AMA Supercross. In his debut season piloting his own TwoTwo Motorsports team, Chad Reed, of Dade City, Fla., captured his sixth-career San Diego win in the Supercross class. GEICO Honda’s Eli Tomac, of Cortez, Colo., captured his first career supercross victory in the Western Regional Supercross Lites class.


It was Reed who crossed the holeshot stripe first to kick off the 20-lap supercross main event with American Honda’s Trey Canard, of Shawnee, Okla., and Red Bull KTM’s Andrew Short, of Smithville, Texas, in tow. Canard quickly made his move for the top spot and held it for the first five laps before falling and stalling his bike. Reed assumed the lead and held it for the remainder of the main event.

“This is incredible,” said Reed. “I‘ve put so much work into this team to make it the best it can be. To win with your name on your chest makes everything so much better. This one is emotional. I just followed Trey because he was showing me some lines. When he went down, it became just about putting together 20 clean laps.”

Canard remounted in third, allowing San Manuel Yamaha’s James Stewart, of Haines City, Fla., to take over second. However, on Lap 15, Stewart stalled his bike, falling to fourth. While running second, Canard suffered his second fall of the evening, allowing Rockstar/Makita Suzuki’s Ryan Dungey, of Belle Plaine, Minn., to secure second with Stewart in third. They would complete the podium in that order.

Championship leader Ryan Villopoto, of Poulsbo, Wash., crashed on the opening lap, but fought through the field to secure a seventh place effort aboard his Monster Energy Kawasaki. He now holds a three-point advantage over Stewart in the points.

“I just stalled it,” said Stewart. “I’m trying my best. I don’t want to just throw it away like that, but I’m glad to get on the podium. I had nothing for Chad tonight, he was riding great, but I made up a lot of points.”

As the gates dropped on the Supercross Lites class main event, Tomac grabbed the holeshot and never looked back, leading wire-to-wire with a convincing win.

“The first five laps I just put my head down and pulled away. It was kind of crazy,” said Tomac, who won by over 10 seconds. “The track was really tricky and slippery. I got a little nervous out (front), but overall it was really good. I’ve learned a lot this season and I’ve gotten a lot better in recent weeks.”

Behind him, a stellar battle ensued for the remaining podium positions among the Monster Energy/Pro Circuit/Kawasaki trio of Josh Hansen, of Elbert, Colo., Tyla Rattray, of Wildomar, Calif., and Broc Tickle, of Holly, Mich., as well as GEICO Honda’s Jimmy Decotis, of Peabody, Mass., and Troy Lee Designs/Lucas Oil Honda’s Cole Seely, of Corona, Calif. As the group of five riders traded positions, it was Rattray and Tickle who prevailed to round out the top three.

Hansen, the class points leader, fell to sixth, still on the mend from a hand injury suffered at the previous round. His advantage over teammate Tickle dwindled to three points as the Western Regional Supercross Lites class Championship takes a midseason break until April 16 in Seattle.

Supercross Anaheim 2...The Battle Continues

As the Monster Energy AMA Supercross, an FIM World Championship, makes its second and final stop at Angel Stadium this Saturday night for the pink-themed “Breast Cancer Awareness” race, Team San Manuel Yamaha’s James Stewart, of Haines City, Fla., has his sights on an eighth-career Supercross class win in Anaheim.

Stewart capped off his second win of the season last weekend in Oakland, and in doing so, moved into the Supercross class points lead, passing Monster Energy Kawasaki’s Ryan Villopoto, of Poulsbo, Wash. The win didn’t come easy; after a crash in the first practice, Stewart missed part of the second practice and all of the third practice.

“I think the biggest thing for me was rebounding after a day like today,” Stewart said after the race in Oakland. “This is a great win for me and my team and hopefully I can do it again at Anaheim this weekend.”

Looking to bounce back from his fourth-place finish last weekend, Villopoto makes his return to Anaheim where he took the first victory of the season.

“I have always liked Anaheim,” said Villopoto. “The race was good to me last time around and I hope I can get back on the podium to gain some valuable championship points.”

Defending Monster Energy Supercross champion Ryan Dungey currently sits in third place, 14 points behind leader James Stewart.

Team Rockstar/Makita Suzuki’s Ryan Dungey, of Belle Plaine, Minn., powered his Yoshimura-equipped Suzuki RM-Z450 to a third-place podium finish in Oakland. Dungey, who is the defending Supercross class champion, started the day with a solid practice and qualified third. A poor start made for a difficult heat race in which he eventually finished fifth. In the main, Dungey’s RM-Z powered him to a fourth-place start and the Rockstar/Makita Suzuki rider rode strong the entire 20-lap main, eventually working his way to second place. A tough break on the last lap resulted in a slip to a third-place podium finish.

"All in all, my RM-Z450 worked great in Oakland and the team did a great job,” said Dungey. “It will be great to go back to Anaheim. We know more what to expect there and hopefully we can get a good start and put the Rockstar/Makita Suzuki up front.”

Dungey’s teammate, Brett Metcalfe, rode his Suzuki to 11th-place in afternoon qualifying from Oakland. Like Dungey, Metcalfe had a tough time in his heat race and finished seventh. In the main, he rode strong, piloting his Suzuki RM-Z450 to a fifth-place finish, his best of the year.

Stewart Back on top @ Supercross in Oakland

Most races this season have been decided by a mistake or a fall, and the Oakland Supercross wasn't any different. This week, the biggest difference was who made the mistake...

Broc Tickle won his first main event of the 2011 season in Oakland, but it's how he did it that's the most notable, as he had to come through the pack and eventually pass his teammate and points leader Josh Hansen for the lead. That's what he did, and he took the win over Hansen while also pulling closer to Hanny in the points chase. James Stewart snatched away his second victory of the season and took over the points lead when Ryan Villopoto crashed out of the lead early in the Oakland main. The series now heads back to Anaheim again this weekend with someone other than Villopoto leading the points for the first time this year.

James "Bubba" Stewart take Pheonix Supercross

Last night at Phoenix’s Chase Field, 2007, 2008 and 2009 AMA Supercross Champion James Stewart shot out of the gates in the main event of the evening. Stewart was followed by Geico Honda’s Kevin Windham, Villopoto, JGR Yamaha’s Justin Brayton and Canard. Rockstar Makita Suzuki’s Ryan Dungey and TwoTwo Motorsports’ Chad Reed ran seventh and eighth in the opening lap as Villopoto made a quick pass on Windham to move into second place. Positions went back and forth as Chad Reed went ahead of Dungey and Canard moved up to third ahead of Brayton and Windham. But on Lap 3 Hahn and Windham fell victim to Phoenix’s slippery track surface and difficult rhythm sections.

Kawasaki's Ryan Villopoto took second in the main after losing the front end on Phoenix's slippery track. Villopoto suffered a costly fall. Meanwhile, Dungey made it around Reed shortly after but couldn’t keep a clean pace, and mistakes allowed Reed to make another pass on the defending SX champ. Ultimately Stewart maintained the advantage provided by Villopoto’s mistake and claimed his first win of the 2011 season. Although Villopoto maintains a two-point lead in the series, he now feels Stewart breathing down his neck.

“I really wanted to pull that holeshot,” said Stewart after his win. “This track was tough tonight but I haven’t won in over a year so I really wanted this one. I was even a little nervous out there but I want to thank everyone on my team for giving such an awesome bike. This feels great.”

Ryan Villopoto Wins the Opening Race at Anaheim

The 2011 Monster Energy Supercross, an FIM World Championship, season started on Saturday in front of a sold out crowd at Angel Stadium. The season was kicked-off by a convincing win by Monster Energy Kawasaki’s Ryan Villopoto, of Poulsbo, Wash. In the opening race of the Supercross Lites Western Regional Championship, Monster Energy/Pro Circuit Kawasaki’s Josh Hansen, of Elbert, Colo., led a clean sweep of the podium by Kawasaki.

Dodge/Hart & Huntington Kawasaki’s Ivan Tedesco, of Murrieta, Calif., raced to the holeshot with Villopoto and Red Bull KTM’s Mike Alessi, of Victorville, Calif., close behind Villopoto made a quick move to take over Alessi on the first lap before going wire-to-wire for his 10th career win in the class.

Monster Energy Supercross Champion Ryan Dungey, of Belle Plaine, Minn., finished second overall, gradually working his way into the runner-up spot and never gave it up. San Manuel Yamaha’s James Stewart, came in third, overcoming a mid-pack start to methodically work his way into podium position on Lap 12.

“I almost went down a few times,” said Stewart. “Next week, I’ll work on my starts and be prepared for Phoenix. I tried my best to get up there. Once I got into third, I tried to make up some time on Ryan (Dungey) but ran out of laps.”

In the Supercross Lites class, it was all Monster Energy/Pro Circuit Kawasaki. In his debut for the team, Broc Tickle, of Holly, Mich., grabbed the early lead and led for eight laps before getting passed by Hansen just at the finish line. The duo then opened up a considerable gap over the field.

Supercross Lites class rookie Tyla Rattray, of Wildomar, Calif., completed the Pro Circuit sweep in third.

The evening was a truly dominant one for the entire Kawasaki organization as the brand led every lap of the main events in both the Supercross and Supercross Lites classes while also leading every lap of competition in the Supercross Lites class.
